The main point of contact between this society and external companies, be that for sponsorships, ad hoc events, or just to keep in good relations because they’re a good contact to have
Core Responsibilities
- Forging connections with Firms, relating to the tech industry
- I don’t think they necessarily have to be firms that are directly related to Cybersecurity, obvious they should be our priority, but:
- It’s good to keep our minds open to more than just traditional cybersecurity companies, because any modern firm needs cybersec
- Indirect links to cybersecurity add more diversity,
e.g. BoA has a large cybersecurity division to protect transactions
- And, also, other firms may have more money…
- Maintaining those connections, since we don’t want to lose touch with them
- Keeping sponsors happy, by ensuring that events run with them turn out well
- Yes, it is partially the OOs responsibility to ensure the quality of these events
- Picking and pitching event ideas (that need money) to potential sponsors, to try and get funding for specific events
- Picking because that particular event may not be relevant to a company or a particular company may have more interest in a specific event
Desired Attributes
- Able to amiably handle emails communications with large corporations
- Patience/know-how to deal with any communication barriers
- Must have proficient language and formal social skills
- The RO must be able to politely and effectively communicate a huge variety of things to a diverse range of people and companies
- The RO is in charge of properly communicating what we offer to the company in return for what we’re asking for (I assume it’ll usually be that way round)
Committee Connections
Treasurer: Obviously, since the OO will usually be the first point-of-contact when it comes to sponsors, ad hoc or continuous, so in all things money, it is the OOs responsibility to work with the Treasurer to flesh out the details
Publicity Officer: Not just for events, but even just general, relevant co-advertising for the firm, as in, their own cybersec event they may be running or a new challenge they’ve released or sth, they’ll likely reach out via the OO, who should pass it to the PO
Academic Chair: Since OO is an Academic branch Officer and most company-related events are likely to be talks/workshops, the AC should be contacted first to OK these events, to ensure that the society has the time and resources to go ahead with it
Academic Events Officer: Similar to AC, but the AEO should be a first point-of-contact after verification when it comes to actually arranging these events
Notes
- I reckon this job may be more consistently busy than the RO, but the bonus is that companies may have their own teams that will take care of some of the admin for us once we have a foot in the door, so there may be less work for the RO once the event has planned out and as it gets closer to the event?
- Low-key, bit of a cross between Secretary and RO, like a more formal RO
- (hence requiring a higher degree of linguistic proficiency)
