i.e. President (I’ll use the two interchangeably)
The watcher, the oversee-er, the guide. And while I’m here, the inexperienced student :p
Core Responsibilities
- Keeping everything from crashing and burning
- Check in on CMs to make sure they’re all managing well
- That they’re able to keep up with their duties
- That interactions between CMs are mostly amicable and effective
- Check in on SMs to see what they like/dislike and what they want to see
- Their desires should help shape what the society does
- Their average input is extremely valuable, their individual input is useful
- Frequently check in with Treasurer to ensure that funds and funding are secure
- Keep up with the AC and CC, to make sure that both sides have sufficient resources to keep their activities going strong
- Ensure that primary tech stack is functioning correctly, joint duty along with TO
- Contribute to the society in whatever way is needed
- Of course coming up with and helping to sort out events
- Likely will be helping PM and TO with their work, since they can get a bit more involved and busy at times
- Also offering a valuable opinion into Branding, Image, and Merch :p
- The primary responsibility of the President is to ensure that everything is working as it should, and that everything is better than it was last year, it’s a very nebulous role description, but that’s where the President should be
Desired Attributes
- Full of ideas, and adaptable to change and CM/SM desires
- Must be willing to listen to what the Members want, since this is their society
- Must also have lots of ideas of what things to do and how to execute them
- Diverse thinking, must be more than willing to consider which other societies pose interesting collaborative opportunities
- At least a decent understanding of Cybersec in order to best define the events and best manage the other CMs, since no-one wants an ignorant manager
- Flexible and Generally skilled
- Should be able to help out with a diverse range of jobs when it’s crunch time and the other CMs need help
- In the very worst-case that there are no better candidates, the President must stand in while finding temporary stand-ins for positions
- Social and sociable
- A Chair should not be reclusive
- Striking up new Society and Firm relations is also something that the President is involved with, not just the OO and RO
- But of course the OO and RO must be informed of new connections
- A Chair should be trusted by their Committee
- A President should be able to speak at events, it comes with the territory
Committee Connections
Academic/CTF Chair: It’s up to the President to OK new event propositions, depending on whether or not they fit with the society’s charter, and the estimated desires of the SMs, while keeping events within the society’s brand
Treasurer: While it’s the Treasurer’s job to make sure the society stays financially above the water, it’s the President’s job to make sure the Treasurer stays afloat
Tech Officer: There’s a lot of tech that goes into supporting the society and keeping everything running smoothly, and that overlap between the Chair and TO’s domains is where they must operate together, to ensure the society’s tech is operational
Secretary: There will likely be a lot of correspondences and firms that will reach out via the Mailbox that may fall more under the jurisdiction of the President, so the Secretary must make sure to pass any such messages along, and the President to keep the Secretary abreast of society developments that may be relevant to external enquiries
Puzzlemaster: Cos what fun is a society without any puzzles? :D
Publicity Officer: Since a lot of the Branding and Image-work will be propagated and maintained by the PO, the Chair and PO need to ensure that it’s all as it’s meant to be
Merchant: Of course the Chair must be involved with the merch, making sure that it’s all good quality stuff, cos quality goes a long way to showing people that we’re not just making merch for the sake of it, but also, getting a hand in with the designs, product choices, and whatnot, since ‘market research’ is also partially the Chair’s domain
